Butterflies are some of the most beautiful creatures in the world. But there’s more to these creatures than meets the eye.

  1. A butterfly is not a fly, but it can fly.
  2. The word butterfly comes from the Old English word beterflye, meaning a creature having wings like a piece of butter.
  3. All butterflies start out as caterpillars.
  4. There are over 100 different types of butterfly eggs on earth.
  5. A butterfly lays her eggs over damp surfaces, such as leaves, rocks and soil.
  6. It takes about three months for a butterfly egg to develop into an adult insect.
  7. Most butterfly species only live for two to four weeks.
  8. Butterflies don’t have teeth or jaws, so they don’t chew their food like other insects do.
  9. Adult butterflies drink nectar from flowers using their long tongues.
